Alexander Supertramp. The way he rejected society and the material values it supports is so inspirational to me. (I’ve included some pretty amazing pictures of this man). I’d love to do the exact same, just to get up one day and leave with no notice, but I don’t think I’d be able to do it. If I could do it my way, this is what I’d do: tell loved ones I’m peacing; pack up my car with every last CD to provide everlasting entertainment; stash a can of pepper spray under the driver’s seat for those sketchy situations; pack a few days worth of clothes; get a pillow and a few blankets; a wallet full of money for all that yummy diner food I’d be chowing down on and let my foot sink on the gas pedal. I’d bring my film camera and a shoebox full of film and just start driving south. Where I go from there is up in the air. Drive around taking endless amount of pictures, meeting people I’d never meet otherwise, and immerse myself in unique situations where pushing the boundaries and learning something new is bound to happen. That’s all I expect in life, but I don’t think you can just sit back and wait for something to come to you. Learning new things, getting over fears, and truly living life every moment are the three things I refuse to give up. My life wouldn’t be complete without those things, despite how difficult they can be to handle. I hate the feeling of being tied down, and I’m stubborn as hell, so the second I feel trapped, I buck like a bronco to get out. That’s how I feel now. Last year of school, and my future is secure (four years of college coming up), and I’m bored as hell. Thank God I’ve got a road trip waiting for me in the summer, but just getting there is going to be the hard part. What I’ve found to help cope is in the art medium, yet still I feel so restless. It’s up to my mind now to keep thinking of new things to do so I can get through to the summer. Internships at the end of the year shouldn’t disappoint, and then the road trip I’m planning should be pretty phenomenal, even if it ends up being as dangerous and stupid as it could be. But that’s for another post.
R.I.P Mr. Supertramp, you’re an inspirational to so many people. I’ve included some pictures of the real Alexander Supertramp (Chris Mccandless is his real name) and a few quotes by him.
“Two years he walks the earth. No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, ’cause “the West is the best.” And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual pilgrimage. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the Great White North. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild.”— Alexander Supertramp May 1992
“So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”— Chris McCandless
he is a big learn to life, he was the great person, he will be recordated.
